The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on August 24 on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay developed a social aware from her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
